Creating Jobs for Ohioans
Mike Dovilla believes all Ohioans who want to work deserve the right to find a job. Dovilla understands the meaning of hard work and personal responsibility. He paid his own way through college by working in restaurants and later putting in 14 hour days with the U.S. Navy in Iraq. While our nation faces economic difficulties, Ohio is experiencing an economic downturn even more severe. More than one in ten Ohioans simply cannot find work, and Ohio has had double digit unemployment for nearly a year straight. Ohio’s situation has not been seriously addressed by House Democrats or Governor Strickland, and their reckless fiscal policies have only made our circumstances worse. This is simply unacceptable.
As your State Representative, Mike Dovilla will work to help Ohio maintain its existing jobs and create new opportunities for employment. Dovilla supports “The Future of Ohio” jobs package House Republicans have offered – a proactive set of legislative reforms introduced in the past year that once passed will authorize a series of tax credits to businesses that hire unemployed Ohioans, to college graduates who reside in Ohio, and to skilled trade workers. Government cannot create jobs, but it can help foster an economic environment that will encourage entrepreneurs to invest, businesses to hire, and working families to stay in Ohio – all of which will restore our state to greatness.
Improving Economic Development
Mike Dovilla believes Ohio has great potential for an economic comeback that has been delayed by a devastating combination of high taxes, over-regulation, and bloated government bureaucracy. This unfriendly business environment has caused an exodus of companies, jobs, and educated citizens from our great state. Ohioans deserve better from their government, which lately has forgotten it serves the will of the people. Our state needs visionary leaders today who are willing to reconsider how we attract and retain the businesses that will form the foundation of Ohio’s economy for the next 50 years and beyond.
As an entrepreneur, Mike Dovilla understands the challenges of running a small business in northeast Ohio and will partner with others to create innovative solutions to transform our state’s economy. This process must begin by reining in out-of-control government spending, then reforming Ohio’s tax structure and small business regulations. Dovilla is already working closely with area small business incubators, regional economic development leaders, and fellow entrepreneurs to generate ideas on how to get Ohio’s economy moving again, a priority on which he will continue to focus during his time in the legislature.
Renewing Our Commitment to World-Class Education
Quality education is a cornerstone of our democracy, and plays a critical role in revitalizing Ohio’s economy. Ohio’s children must have access to a high quality education which will give them the best opportunity to compete for jobs and economic success. Additionally, there must be a recommitment from policy makers to provide the necessary resources to those unemployed through workforce development and job training. No longer are Ohioans competing with their neighbors for a job, but with those throughout the country and around the world. Our education policies must match our commitment to put all Ohioans in the best position to succeed.
A proud graduate of Berea’s public schools, Mike Dovilla believes education is most effective when parents play an integral role in their children’s learning experience. By empowering parents, teachers, and principals to have a more direct part in each student’s individual needs, we can give our children the best chance for educational success. It is time the values of our classrooms reflect the values of our homes, and that is only possible by making parents part of the answer in addressing education reform. Mike Dovilla also believes the presence of competition and appropriate funding are key factors in receiving a quality education at all levels.
Reforming State Government to Work for the People
In recent years, Ohioans have lost trust in politicians from both parties in Columbus and Washington. With ethical scandals, unfulfilled campaign promises, and bureaucracies that duplicate effort and waste taxpayer dollars, state government is no longer working for Ohioans.
Mike Dovilla is a decorated Naval officer who lives by the values of honor, courage, and commitment. In the legislature, Dovilla will work to bring a new era of integrity to state government, applying those principles and experiences as a public and private sector executive to his efforts on behalf of the people of the 18th District. Dovilla supports reform through a thoughtful process of streamlining government, including the consolidation of agencies and a comprehensive review of state programs for efficiency and effectiveness. By making these important structural reforms, we can make government run more efficiently and provide even higher quality in services it performs. Adopting a Comprehensive Energy Policy
Energy is an issue that impacts each and every Ohioan as well as America’s national security. It is essential for our state to develop a comprehensive, sustainable energy policy that employs all of Ohio’s diverse energy resources and serves as a mechanism to create new jobs for our citizens.
Mike Dovilla possesses substantial experience on energy policy, proudly assisting on the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee during his graduate studies. More recently, he has consulted for nonprofit organizations on ways to expand domestic energy resources to keep costs down for Ohio residents and businesses, while advancing our nation’s energy independence. In the Ohio House, Mike will work with others to promote energy policies that will ensure stable prices for consumers and generate new jobs for Ohioans while protecting our environment.
Providing Affordable and Accessible Health Care
Northeast Ohio is a leader in health care, with some of the best known and well respected doctors in the world. Our premier medical institutions are among Greater Cleveland’s largest employers. These facilities serve as key drivers to our region’s economic success, and are centers of research and innovation in a wide variety of medical fields. Yet, Ohio’s population continues to age as an increasing amount of young people leave the state, resulting in financial and health care burdens that we must work to address.
Mike Dovilla believes that increased government involvement is not the solution to getting our nation’s or state’s health care costs under control. By transforming the health care system with technology, portability, and true competition, we can help increase quality and access throughout our state. Ohio can be a model for the future of American health care. As State Representative, Dovilla will partner with his colleagues, health care professionals, and citizens to reform the system in a way that reduces bureaucracy and increases consumer choice for all Ohioans while maintaining cost controls.
